What is a Japanese Wagyu individual identification number and what is it for?

When beef is sold as Japanese Wagyu, origin should not rely only on a marbling photograph or a word printed on the package. Japan operates a national cattle traceability system based on an individual identification number assigned to each animal.

The number is not a quality grade, does not automatically mean A5 or a particular BMS, and is not the same thing as pedigree. Its primary job is to identify the animal and connect it to production records.

What is the individual identification number?

Every cattle covered by the Japanese system receives a unique number. The identifier follows records from production through relevant stages of distribution.

Why does Japan use cattle traceability?

The system supports animal-health control and consumer information, particularly following the BSE crisis. For premium Wagyu it also provides a strong commercial benefit: origin can be backed by records rather than marketing alone.

What information can it reveal?

Associated records can include birth date, sex, breed category, locations where the animal was raised and registered movements. What consumers can see depends on the query system and retail format.

Does the number prove A5?

No. A5 is a carcass-grading result and requires grading information. Identification supports identity and traceability.

Does it show BMS?

Not by itself. BMS is a marbling assessment. A seller claiming BMS 10 or 12 should support that claim with grading information rather than simply showing an identification number.

Identification versus pedigree

Pedigree documents ancestors. The identification number follows the individual animal and its history. See our Wagyu pedigree guide.

Do all Japanese Wagyu cattle have identification?

Japan's cattle traceability framework applies more broadly than Wagyu. This makes the individual number general cattle infrastructure, although it is especially valuable when buying high-value premium beef.

What happens when beef is portioned?

Carcasses are divided into cuts and retail portions. Operators must preserve traceability so products can be connected to the relevant identifiers. The consumer-facing format may be a printed number, code or distributor documentation.

What about QR codes?

Japanese organisations have developed QR-based information systems that make origin data easier to access. The QR code is an interface, not traceability itself; valid records must sit behind it.

How to distinguish the cattle ID from other numbers

A premium beef label may contain several codes at the same time: the individual cattle identification number, a carcass or slaughter reference, an importer or distributor lot and a retailer SKU. They are not interchangeable. The cattle ID is the reference tied to the animal within Japan’s traceability framework, while commercial lot numbers help operators manage portions after processing and distribution.

For a retail buyer, the goal is not to memorise every code format. It is to be able to ask how the portion in the pack connects back to the underlying animal or carcass record. A transparent seller should be able to explain that chain, especially when the listing makes specific claims about Japanese origin, grade or regional provenance.

How should buyers use the number?

If identification or supporting documentation is provided, check that it is consistent with the advertised origin and product details. For expensive A5 with no explanation of traceability, asking the seller for documentation is reasonable.

Kobe and regional brands

Kobe applies additional requirements involving Tajima cattle, Hyogo production and quality criteria. Individual identification supports the chain of proof but does not by itself make beef Kobe.

What should a transparent product page show?

Clear origin, grade when claimed, cut, weight, storage condition and an explanation of traceability. An individual number, certificate or verifiable QR adds confidence.

The conclusion

The individual identification number is a backbone of Japanese cattle traceability. It connects beef and animal to production records, but it should not be confused with A5, BMS, pedigree or a regional brand.

Identification answers “which animal is behind this?”; grading answers “how was the carcass evaluated?”; a regional brand answers “which additional rules does it satisfy?”

Frequently asked questions

Is the Japanese cattle ID ten digits?

Yes, Japan's system uses a ten-digit individual identification number.

Does it prove A5?

No. A5 comes from carcass grading.

Is it the same as pedigree?

No. Identification tracks the animal; pedigree documents ancestry.

Can it help verify origin?

Yes. It links the beef to registered production-history information.
