Harvest and buying guide

Seeing mangoes in shops in February, July and October can make their season seem endless. In reality, Spain has a limited local mango harvest. At other times of year, the fruit offered by Spanish retailers may come from producers in different countries. If you want to buy a mango that was grown in Spain, the seller’s postal address is not enough: you need to check the origin of the actual fruit.

Broadly speaking, the Spanish mango harvest is concentrated from late summer into autumn, particularly in subtropical growing areas of Andalusia. Early varieties may appear in August and September. Osteen is an important cultivar through September and October, while later fruit such as Keitt can extend the season. These are approximate windows, not guaranteed dates for every year.

Why a tropical fruit grows in southern Spain

Parts of the Andalusian Mediterranean coast, especially areas of Málaga and Granada, have conditions that support commercial mango growing. Coastal influence, sheltered valleys and local microclimates all matter. It does not follow that every part of Spain has suitable conditions or that every harvest unfolds in the same way.

Temperatures, flowering, irrigation and the cultivar all affect when the fruit develops and is ready for picking. An unusual spring or an episode of intense heat can shift the timetable. Growers follow their orchards rather than a date fixed on a printed calendar.

A seasonal guide is therefore best understood as a prompt to check what is being harvested, not a guarantee of uninterrupted stock. A particular variety being unavailable for a week may simply reflect how that year’s campaign is progressing.

Osteen and Keitt do not arrive at the same time

The Andalusian agricultural monitoring service describes the major mango cultivars grown locally and their usual harvest periods. Osteen is one of the region’s leading varieties and often appears from around mid-September into October. Keitt has a later profile and can remain available as some earlier varieties finish.

Other early cultivars and smaller plantings add variety to the campaign. A grower may offer different names as the weeks progress. If you cannot find the mango you bought in October when you shop again in August, that does not necessarily mean the producer has changed standards; another cultivar may be the one currently being picked.

These differences matter on the plate. Osteen often has aromatic flesh with relatively little fibre, while Keitt can be larger and firmer. Harvest date alone does not determine flavour, but cultivar is a useful part of setting expectations. Our mango variety comparison explores their textures and uses.

Winter and spring bring a different supply picture

When the local harvest ends, mangoes available in Spain frequently come from imports. The countries supplying fruit may change with the seasons in their own growing regions. A mango on sale in March should not be described as grown on the Málaga coast merely because that is where a distributor keeps its warehouse.

Imported mango can be excellent when harvested, selected and transported appropriately. The difference lies in what you prioritise. If buying locally grown Spanish fruit matters most, you have a narrower shopping window. If you want mango at other times, you can compare fruit from other origins on its actual qualities. Transparency matters in both cases.

Being in season also does not guarantee that a mango arrives ready to eat. Fruit is often dispatched while firm to reduce damage in transit. Mangoes can continue ripening after harvest, and green skin does not universally mean unripe flesh; this varies by cultivar.

What a useful mango listing should tell you

Look for country or region of origin, exact cultivar, pack weight and expected condition on delivery. A listing that merely says “Spanish mango” without further details leaves important questions unanswered. Check whether the price refers to an individual piece, a kilogram or a full box, and how shipping is calculated.

If you want mango for tonight, a piece with slight give and pleasant aroma is usually the better choice. If you are buying for next week, firm fruit intended to ripen at home may suit you. In online orders, clear guidance about when the pieces are likely to be ready is particularly useful.

On delivery, open the box and check for significant damage. Separate the fruit by firmness. Leave mangoes that still need time in a well-ventilated place away from direct sunlight. Once ripe, chilling can slow further softening. Do not interpret red skin as universal proof of sweetness; in some varieties it tells you more about the cultivar and growing conditions than about readiness to eat.

Seasonality is useful when you know the origin

The Spanish harvest creates an opportunity to try locally grown fruit and discover cultivars that are not always available at other times. It does not make every imported mango inferior, nor does it mean farmers all pick on exactly the same day.

When a shop identifies the cultivar and honestly describes availability, the calendar becomes a helpful shopping tool. It tells you when to look for a particular fruit and what questions to ask before you place an order. Available mixed boxes containing mango may change with the harvest; confirm the actual origin and cultivar.

Spanish mangoes follow a seasonal harvest.
