When a food order arrives at home, the first job is simple: move each item into the storage conditions it requires before the boxes are forgotten. Not everything belongs in the refrigerator, and chilled food should not sit on the kitchen counter while the rest of the parcel is being organised.<\/p>\n

The label and manufacturer’s instructions always take priority. Still, understanding the three broad groups \u2014 chilled, frozen and shelf-stable \u2014 makes it much easier to unpack quickly and avoid common mistakes.<\/p>\n

Start by sorting the delivery<\/h2>\n

Divide the order into chilled products, frozen products and foods that are stable at ambient temperature. If the parcel contains fresh meat, certain cheeses or other foods that must be refrigerated, deal with those first. Frozen products should also be transferred to the freezer promptly.<\/p>\n

You can then take more time with commercial preserves, olive oil, dried pulses, shelf-stable cured products and hampers that do not require refrigeration. This simple sequence reduces the time temperature-sensitive foods spend outside their intended conditions.<\/p>\n

What normally belongs in the refrigerator<\/h2>\n

The refrigerator is for foods whose label requires chilled storage and for many products that need refrigeration once opened. Fresh meat, chilled meat preparations, some cheeses, prepared fresh foods and numerous opened products fall into this group.<\/p>\n

Appearance is not a reliable universal rule. Two cheeses can look similar while carrying different storage instructions, and two charcuterie products may be handled differently depending on their processing, packaging and format. A label stating \u201ckeep refrigerated\u201d or specifying a temperature range is more useful than an assumption.<\/p>\n

Store chilled food without blocking cold-air circulation<\/h2>\n

An overfilled refrigerator may distribute cold air less effectively. Leave reasonable space around products and avoid packing items so tightly that vents are blocked. A food that arrives correctly chilled should return to stable refrigerated storage as soon as practical.<\/p>\n

The refrigerator door also experiences larger temperature swings when it is opened repeatedly, so it is generally not the best location for the most temperature-sensitive foods. Exact cold zones vary by appliance design, and the manufacturer’s manual is the best reference.<\/p>\n

What should go in the freezer<\/h2>\n

A product sold and delivered frozen should be transferred directly to the freezer. If you order frozen meat in bulk, check available capacity before buying. Forcing packs into an overcrowded compartment makes organisation difficult and can interfere with air circulation.<\/p>\n

If a product arrives chilled and you want to freeze it for longer storage, first confirm that freezing is appropriate and that it has not previously been thawed. The label or retailer may provide this information. Freezing should not be treated as an automatic solution for every food.<\/p>\n

What can go in the pantry<\/h2>\n

Many foods are shelf-stable while unopened: commercial preserves, dried pulses, olive oils, some cured products, rice, flour and other foods preserved through low moisture or processing. But \u201cdoes not need refrigeration\u201d does not mean \u201ccan be stored anywhere\u201d.<\/p>\n

A good pantry is dry, clean, protected from sunlight and away from strong heat sources. A cupboard directly above an oven or beside a boiler may be a poor choice. With olive oil in particular, repeated exposure to light and heat accelerates quality loss.<\/p>\n

Unopened and opened preserves are different situations<\/h2>\n

An unopened commercial preserve with an intact seal is normally shelf-stable under the conditions specified by the manufacturer. Once opened, the rules change: follow the label, refrigerate where instructed and observe the recommended period for use.<\/p>\n

If a tin or jar arrives swollen, leaking, badly damaged around the seal, with a raised lid or with signs that the vacuum has been lost, do not simply place it in the pantry as normal stock. Set it aside and contact the retailer if the damage occurred in transport.<\/p>\n

Olive oil belongs away from light and heat<\/h2>\n

Extra virgin olive oil does not normally require domestic refrigeration. The main priorities are limiting exposure to light, heat and oxygen. Store closed bottles or containers in a cool, dark place, and close opened containers properly after each use.<\/p>\n

For a 5 litre format, think about daily handling. It can be convenient to keep the main container tightly closed in a cool cupboard and refill a smaller food-safe container for regular use, provided it is clean and suitable for oil.<\/p>\n

Dried pulses and other pantry foods<\/h2>\n

Dried beans, chickpeas and lentils benefit from dry storage protected from moisture, insects and strong odours. Keeping the original pack well sealed or moving the contents to a clean, tightly closing container makes the pantry easier to manage.<\/p>\n

A simple stock rotation also helps: keep products with the nearest date at the front and newer purchases behind them. This reduces the chance of forgotten packs building up.<\/p>\n

Ham, charcuterie and cheese depend on the exact format<\/h2>\n

It is risky to make one rule for every cured product. A whole piece, a vacuum-packed block and a sliced pack can have different storage requirements. The same is true of whole cheeses and pre-cut wedges. Follow the packaging information and adjust storage after opening as directed.<\/p>\n

\u201cCured\u201d does not automatically mean \u201calways keep outside the refrigerator\u201d. Processing method, moisture, packaging and producer instructions all matter.<\/p>\n

What to check when a delivery uses chilled packaging<\/h2>\n

If an item was supposed to arrive chilled or frozen, inspect both the packaging and the food when it arrives. Ice packs can be partly thawed without automatically proving that the shipment failed, but the food itself still needs to be within the conditions intended by the retailer.<\/p>\n

If there is a reasonable concern about a perishable product, do not rely solely on smell or appearance. Photograph the delivery and contact the retailer, particularly after a clear temperature problem or a significant delay.<\/p>\n

Keep useful information after unpacking<\/h2>\n

Do not immediately discard labels or instructions if you remove food from its outer box. Recording the opening date can be useful, and batch details, best-before dates or use-by dates should remain available while the product is being consumed.<\/p>\n

Storing a food delivery correctly does not require complicated techniques. Prioritise temperature-sensitive items, follow the label and give each product an environment that matches its storage requirements.<\/p>\n
