PDO, PGI and TSG are European quality schemes, but they do not mean the same thing. All three protect registered names or specialities through verifiable rules. The geographical link is strongest for a Protected Designation of Origin, more flexible for a Protected Geographical Indication, while a Traditional Speciality Guaranteed focuses on a recognised traditional character rather than requiring production in one particular place.<\/p>\n

Understanding the distinction avoids two common mistakes: assuming every \u201ctypical\u201d regional food has official protection, and believing a scheme guarantees that a product will taste subjectively better than every alternative. What it guarantees is compliance with a defined specification.<\/p>\n

What is a PDO?<\/h2>\n

A Protected Designation of Origin identifies products whose quality or characteristics are essentially or exclusively linked to a particular geographical environment, including natural and human factors. In general, the key production, processing and preparation stages take place within the defined area.<\/p>\n

That close territorial relationship is the central idea. A cheese PDO specification may define the milk-production zone, permitted breeds or processing and maturation rules. An olive-oil PDO can delimit municipalities, olive varieties and production or quality requirements.<\/p>\n

The protected name cannot simply be applied to a similar product made outside the registered conditions.<\/p>\n

What is a PGI?<\/h2>\n

A Protected Geographical Indication also links a food to a place, but the connection is more flexible. A given quality, reputation or other characteristic must be essentially attributable to its geographical origin, and at least one relevant production, processing or preparation stage takes place in the defined area.<\/p>\n

This lets a food be strongly associated with a region without requiring every stage and every raw material to originate there. The individual PGI specification determines exactly which part of the chain has the geographical link.<\/p>\n

What is a TSG?<\/h2>\n

A Traditional Speciality Guaranteed protects a recognised traditional composition, recipe or production method. Unlike PDO and PGI, geography is not the core requirement.<\/p>\n

A TSG product can therefore be made in different places provided it follows the registered specification. The scheme protects the defined traditional speciality against use that does not respect those conditions. It is better understood as a guarantee of \u201cwhat it is or how it is made\u201d rather than \u201cwhere it is made\u201d.<\/p>\n

The difference in one sentence<\/h2>\n

A useful mental shortcut is: PDO = strongest complete territorial link; PGI = meaningful but more flexible geographical link; TSG = defined tradition without a required geographical origin<\/strong>. This is a practical simplification; the exact requirements always come from each registered specification.<\/p>\n

You cannot infer every production rule from the acronym alone. Two different PDOs can impose very different requirements because their specifications describe different foods.<\/p>\n

What exactly is a product specification?<\/h2>\n

The specification is what turns a quality logo into a verifiable scheme. It describes the product, defines the geographical area where relevant, sets requirements for raw materials and methods, establishes characteristics and explains the link with origin or tradition.<\/p>\n

When you want to know what a PDO or PGI really guarantees, the meaningful detail is in that document rather than the graphic design of the logo. It can specify anything from permitted plant varieties to minimum maturation or measurable physical and chemical characteristics.<\/p>\n

Who checks compliance?<\/h2>\n

These schemes are not based solely on a manufacturer\u2019s declaration. They operate through control and certification arrangements involving competent authorities or authorised bodies according to the relevant rules.<\/p>\n

Producers selling under the protected name must comply with the specification. This provides traceability and consistency to the meaning of the scheme, while still leaving room for normal differences among producers, harvests, maturation levels and styles.<\/p>\n

Does PDO mean a small producer made it?<\/h2>\n

No. A PDO can include small farms, cooperatives, medium-sized businesses and major operators, provided they comply with the specification. The designation describes the product and its territorial relationship, not the size of the company.<\/p>\n

Equally, food without a PDO can be local, carefully made and outstanding. There may be no registered scheme for that product, or the producer may choose to work outside one.<\/p>\n

Does the logo guarantee better flavour?<\/h2>\n

It guarantees defined characteristics and production conditions, not one universal sensory preference. Different producers within a PDO can have different styles, and consumers can prefer different examples.<\/p>\n

The value of the scheme lies in reducing uncertainty about identity, origin and method. Choosing the one you enjoy most still requires attention to producer, variety, harvest where relevant, maturation and flavour profile.<\/p>\n

Recognising official protection rather than imitations<\/h2>\n

Registered products use protected names and official symbols according to the applicable rules. Labels may also contain identification elements linked to the certification or control system.<\/p>\n

Expressions such as \u201ctraditional style\u201d, \u201cmountain recipe\u201d or \u201cregional type\u201d do not automatically mean PDO or PGI. If a specific designation matters to the purchase, check the exact registered name and certification shown on the product.<\/p>\n

PDO and PGI are not the same as organic certification<\/h2>\n

Organic production regulates a production system under specific farming and livestock standards. PDO and PGI regulate geographical identity. A food can carry both if it meets both sets of requirements, but one does not imply the other.<\/p>\n

These schemes are also independent of commercial words such as gourmet or premium.<\/p>\n

How to use the schemes when shopping<\/h2>\n

Look for PDO or PGI when you value a defined link with a place and want the rules behind that identity. Look for TSG when the traditional speciality itself is the key attribute. Then compare within the scheme: producer, format, ingredients, maturation, price and intended use.<\/p>\n

For a gift, a recognisable designation can add context and a story. For everyday use, value for money may dominate. The logo informs the choice; it does not make it for you.<\/p>\n

Mixed products for comparing different quality schemes<\/h2>\n

Gourmet sets may combine PDO or PGI foods with other certifications and products carrying no geographical scheme at all. Reading each item separately prevents us from attributing a guarantee to the whole set when it applies only to one product.<\/p>\n
