Spain has a strong tradition of dry pulses, but only a small proportion of the products on the market are protected by a PDO or PGI.<\/p>\n

These schemes do not simply mean \u00abgood product\u00bb, and they do not make unprotected pulses inferior. Their purpose is to protect names linked to a geographical area and to a verifiable product specification.<\/p>\n

For pulses, a specification may define the growing area, variety or local ecotype, physical characteristics of the seed, production practices, conditioning and controls. Understanding what the schemes actually guarantee makes it easier to distinguish an official geographical indication from a casual place name used in marketing.<\/p>\n

PDO and PGI: the essential difference<\/h2>\n

A PDO requires a particularly strong link between the product’s defining characteristics and its geographical area, with the relevant production stages tied to that territory.<\/p>\n

A PGI also protects a geographical link, but the legal structure allows a different degree of connection between the stages and the area. A given quality, reputation or characteristic must still be attributable to the protected origin and the approved specification must be followed.<\/p>\n

For shoppers, both are legally controlled names and origin schemes. They are not private badges created by a retailer.<\/p>\n

Which Spanish pulses have protected names<\/h2>\n

Spain’s protected pulse names include beans, fabes, lentils and chickpeas from several regions.<\/p>\n

They include Alubia de Anguiano PDO, Alubia de La Ba\u00f1eza-Le\u00f3n PGI, Faba Asturiana PGI, Faba de Lourenz\u00e1 PGI, Fesols de Santa Pau PDO, Garbanzo de Escacena PGI, Garbanzo de Fuentesa\u00faco PGI, Jud\u00edas de El Barco de \u00c1vila PGI, Lenteja de La Armu\u00f1a PGI, Lenteja de Tierra de Campos PGI and Mongeta del Ganxet PDO.<\/p>\n

Administrative lists can change when new names are registered or specifications are amended, so the MAPA and EU registers are the right places to confirm the current legal status.<\/p>\n

Protected beans and fabes<\/h2>\n

Several Spanish quality schemes cover dry beans. Faba Asturiana PGI is linked to Asturias and the large white faba used in fabada. Faba de Lourenz\u00e1 PGI protects the local Faba Galaica variety in Galicia.<\/p>\n

Alubia de La Ba\u00f1eza-Le\u00f3n PGI covers specified bean types in Castilla y Le\u00f3n, while Jud\u00edas de El Barco de \u00c1vila PGI protects traditional beans from its \u00c1vila production area.<\/p>\n

Catalonia has Mongeta del Ganxet PDO and Fesols de Santa Pau PDO, two very different products. Alubia de Anguiano PDO adds a protected wine-coloured bean from La Rioja.<\/p>\n

Protected lentils<\/h2>\n

Two major protected lentil names are found in Castilla y Le\u00f3n: Lenteja de Tierra de Campos PGI and Lenteja de La Armu\u00f1a PGI.<\/p>\n

Tierra de Campos protects a small brown pardina-type lentil adapted to its natural region. La Armu\u00f1a is associated with a larger traditional lentil and the production history of that area.<\/p>\n

The schemes do not mean that every pardina or large castellana-type lentil belongs to those PGIs. The protected name is reserved for product that meets the geographical, product and control requirements.<\/p>\n

Protected chickpeas<\/h2>\n

Garbanzo de Fuentesa\u00faco PGI is tied to a production zone in Zamora and to a detailed specification covering product characteristics. Its specification even uses physical measures such as the weight of one hundred dry seeds.<\/p>\n

Garbanzo de Escacena PGI covers chickpeas from municipalities in Huelva and Seville and protects approved Lechoso-type material that meets the specification.<\/p>\n

Excellent pedrosillano, castellano and lechoso chickpeas also exist outside protected schemes. A PGI protects a geographical name, not exclusive ownership of every similar commercial type.<\/p>\n

What a product specification actually guarantees<\/h2>\n

The specification is the key document. It defines which product may use the name, where it must be produced, the permitted varieties or ecotypes and the characteristics that must be checked.<\/p>\n

Depending on the scheme, it may cover size, colour, moisture, seed integrity, weight, culinary traits or conditioning methods. Traceability and verification procedures are also part of the system.<\/p>\n

That is far more precise than a marketing phrase such as \u00abfrom the region\u00bb. A product using a PDO or PGI name must comply with the corresponding control framework.<\/p>\n

What a PDO or PGI does not guarantee<\/h2>\n

It does not guarantee that you personally will prefer the taste. A protected pulse may not be the best choice for the dish you want to cook.<\/p>\n

It also does not mean every unprotected bag is lower quality. Small producers, local varieties and excellent crops can exist outside EU geographical schemes.<\/p>\n

And the logo cannot compensate for poor storage. Protected pulses can still lose cooking quality if exposed to heat, moisture or excessive storage time.<\/p>\n

How to recognise the authentic product<\/h2>\n

Look for the complete protected name, the relevant EU logo and any identification required by the managing body.<\/p>\n

Do not confuse phrases such as \u00abFuentesa\u00faco style\u00bb, \u00abfaba type\u00bb or \u00abfrom the area\u00bb with the official certification. Use of protected names is regulated.<\/p>\n

When shopping online, the product page should state the quality scheme clearly when one applies. The MAPA register also allows consumers to verify each name and consult its official specification.<\/p>\n

Is it worth paying more for a PDO or PGI pulse?<\/h2>\n

It depends on what you value. If you want a specific origin, local variety, traceability and a verified specification, the scheme provides real information that can justify a higher price.<\/p>\n

If your priority is an economical everyday pulse, excellent alternatives may be available without a protected logo.<\/p>\n

The useful comparison is not \u00abprotected equals good, unprotected equals bad\u00bb. It is a product with a defined geographical and technical guarantee versus one whose quality must be assessed through producer, origin, variety, freshness and cooking performance.<\/p>\n

Bottom line<\/h2>\n

PDO and PGI schemes protect specific names, territories and product specifications. In Spain they cover beans, fabes, lentils and chickpeas with very different traditions and characteristics.<\/p>\n

The logo adds traceability and a verifiable specification, but it does not replace personal taste or make unprotected pulses automatically inferior. Use it as one layer of information: confirm what it guarantees, then decide whether those characteristics are valuable to you.<\/p>\n
