Why lettuce develops red or brown edges<\/h2>\n

Rehydration only makes sense for healthy leaves that have lost turgor.<\/p>\n Online advice sometimes treats any red edge as proof that lettuce should be thrown away. That rule is too simplistic. Pigmentation and browning can be normal tissue responses to cutting, stress and ageing.<\/p>\n The better question is how the tissue behaves. Firm leaves without slime, mould or abnormal odours should be interpreted differently from wet, collapsing leaves.<\/p>\n Open the head and inspect more than one layer. If the issue is limited to dry outer tips, remove them and prioritise the lettuce for early consumption.
